Background Information:
Numerous situations exist where monitoring breathing can provide helpful insight into a person’s health and exertion level. Numerous devices have been proposed or have been developed to monitor respiration but suffer from many significant drawbacks. One such drawback is that the devices are bulky, heavy, and difficult to use during activity. A number of commercial devices exist that consist of a strap around the user’s chest to detect movement as the user breathes while it monitors aspects of respiration. These types of devices are not suitable for use when the user is active for extended periods of time and place undue stresses on the user that influence the quality of data obtained.
Existing solutions also do not provide a full account of the user’s health and respiration related physical aspects. MSTS is seeking partners to develop a wireless and minimally invasive respiration monitoring system that collects respiratory rate, volume (tidal and minute ventilation), ratio of abdominal and thoracic excursion, breath cycle ration, respiratory rhythm, and cardio-respiratory synchronization.
Opportunity Description:
Mission Support and Test Services (MSTS), Management and Operations Contractor for the Nevada National Security Site under the Department of Energy, possesses the intellectual property and know-how to develop a wireless respiration monitoring system and is seeking partners in the development and commercialization effort of the sensor system, associated electronics, data exfiltration, and sensor management software. Partners are sought to collaborate via Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) or commercial license agreement. MSTS is available to collaborate with non-federal entities (NFEs) including Business, Industry and Non-Profits, Universities, and Government Agencies to leverage a broad spectrum of talent and capabilities.
